Professor Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, the 1980 Nobel Peace Prize winner, anticipated the subjects he will debate in the 6th edition of the Conference on Media, Religion and Culture in the collective interview that took place this morning (11), at Fnac, in Sao Paulo. The Conference will take place at 5 p.m at the Methodist University of Sao Paulo (Universidade Metodista de São Paulo). Tolerance, dialogue and love between people were the themes highlighted by the Argentinean in the searching for peace.

“Debate and plurality are important in the peace development. We can only improve the world scenery through dialogue and tolerance”, said Esquivel.

Present-day and polemic subjects like Human Rights in South America, Amnesty Law and the judgment of the soldiers involved in torture, the future of the world hunger, religious plurality and the means of communication alienating monopoly were broached by the journalists during the interview.

“There is a need of understanding all religions. God belongs to everybody, not only to one people. We must share information and learn through different religions”, highlighted the Professor.

When it comes to military torture problems, Esquivel declared that the coexistence of democracy and impunity is impossible. “It’s essential to remember the army’s role in the Military Dictatorship period.”

The formation of a single thought and the fading of different popular cultures are examples of themes that will be discussed during the three days of Conference. Esquivel said that the technological development and today’s “rush” are two factors that had made people lose their identity and world’s view.

Another theme debated by the Professor was the responsibility of the journalists and means of communication. “You (journalists) have the text power. With a single world we can love and destroy. Words have a gun’s power”.

The Conference, which is the first to be organized in Latin America, is supported by UNESCO/Metodista Communication Chair and by the Latin America region of the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC-AL). The event will take place between the 11th and 14th of August, at Rudge Ramos campus.
