Based on a 1837statement of Daniel Parish Kidder about the “tolerant character of the Brazilian Catholicism”, the author researches on the groups of Catholicism in the Second Empire (1840-1889) in Brazil. Both main groups, conservative (Ultramontanism) and Liberal (Galicanism, Jansenism and Masonry), are analyzed, starting from the impact of Iluminism in Portugal, going through the arrival of the Portuguese court to Brazil, up to the formation, development and decline of the Brazilian Empire.
Catholicism – Galicanism – Jansenism – Ultramontanism.
