Massage Therapy Training With Bamboo

There are many types of massage, each with their own benefits to relieve stress, pain or enhance general wellbeing. Massage is an ancient art with many variations depending on the country of origin. I explore some of the most popular, explaining the treatment and their individual benefits.

1. You are always right and should get exactly what you want. Many massage consumers assume that you are going to a professional massage therapist and therefore whatever they say goes. The old adage that the consumer is always right also applies to the massage therapy industry. Of course, you want to work with a "trusted expert", but that does not mean that if you think you need more focus on a particular area or altered pressure that you should not receive exactly that.

Hot stone massage combines the proven benefits of Swedish massage with the deep heat and pressure provided by using warm basalt stones and soothing oils to relax the muscles, allowing for a deeper and more intense all-over massage. The stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at light, medium or deep pressure levels in the treatment of sore muscles, back pain, stress and other common ailments. A milky white fluid called lymph carries impurities and waste away from the tissues and passes through gland-like structures spaced throughout the lymphatic system that act as filtering valves. The lymph does not circulate as blood does, so its movement depends largely on the squeezing effect of muscle contractions. Consequently, inactive people fail to stimulate lymph flow. If they look like they are relaxed, calm or even happy, keep on massaging the way you are massaging; however if they look like they're in pain, or uncomfortable, go lighter on your massages. Doing this will also help you develop key parenting skills (reading body language of your children and understanding what it means).

Massaging babies also help strengthen their joints, ligaments and muscles. Massaging also helps fight off common ailments that appear in the early years of the baby's life. As well, there have been countless studies on baby massaging and how it affects the lives of the baby when they are older. They find that baby's who had more physical contact (massaged, carried, gently handled, breastfed, played with, and so forth) showed more compassion, empathy and cooperated more with others when they reached their adult years.

You'll have improved joint movement. Through the use of direct pressure, massage can affect the muscles and connective tissues in the body, increasing mobility. This can help increase the range of motion in the joints and lesson stiffness in the muscles, tendons and ligaments for those who have arthritis.

Note: If you are receiving a massage for a goal of reliving pain or a specific injury then your massage therapist will need to discuss your history with you and explain what they are doing. You also may be asked to move around on the table from face down, side lying to on your back.

- Increase the body's secretions and excretions. There is a proven increase in the production of gastric juices, saliva, and urine after massage. There is also increased excretion of nitrogen, inorganic phosphorous, and sodium chloride (salt). This suggests that the metabolic rate (the utilization of absorbed material by the body's cells) increases.

Also, the simple holding of an area while letting the warmth from the therapists hands penetrate the tissues, can be very soothing and the gentle moving of your arm can help encourage local circulation of blood and lymph and promote greater mobility.

How do you choose the right massage therapist? Before you go looking for a massage therapist, you should talk to your doctor about whether or not it's a good idea for you. If you have certain conditions, such as dermatomyositis or severe osteoporosis (the thinning of your bones), your doctor may advise you not to try massages. Once you have the go ahead from your doctor, you can start looking for a massage therapist, but you will want to make sure that they have the necessary education and licensing. It might be a good idea to find one who has worked with people with arthritis and who you're comfortable with. The person you choose should be someone you feel safe with, safe enough to tell them your needs and what you prefer. Please, don't be afraid to give feedback if something doesn't feel right or is uncomfortable or causes pain. A good massage therapist will ask you questions about your current medical conditions, if you're experiencing a flare-up, or about the severity and frequency of your symptoms, such as your pain or your level of functionality.- Enhance skin condition. Massage directly improves the function of the sebaceous (oil) and sweat glands which keep the skin lubricated, clean and cooled. Tough, inflexible skin can become softer and more supple.

If you're going to a resort, hotel or massage clinic, you may not be able to talk to your therapist directly when you make the appointment. This is too bad, but can't be helped. However, most times the person setting appointments will be required to know the different modalities the therapist is qualified in so that they know what appointments they can schedule.

Before therapist begins doing the massage they should tell you that if at any time during the massage you would like more or less pressure to just let them know and they will accommodate you. If you are getting the massage for general relaxation the massage therapist should not talk with you during the session. This is one of the chief complaints I hear from massage consumers across the country when they tell me about their massage experiences. I have heard of therapists who will tell the client about all their personal problems while the client is "held hostage" and is paying good money to council these therapists on their personal issues.

There are many benefits of massaging your baby. For example, it helps bond the parent with the baby; as well it helps with muscle relaxation and more importantly, growth development. The benefits of baby massage have only been discovered recently over the last 3 decades in the west. In Asia and Africa, baby massages, have been done for centuries. In UK, baby massages can be done at hospitals, nurseries or in special clinics that run under the nation health service.

The average cost of a massage can vary widely, ranging from $30 to $120 and up per hour. Check with your insurance provider to see if they pay for a massage because a lot of times when it's ordered by your doctor there is a good chance your insurance will pay for it. A full-body massage usually last for about an hour or you can get a half-hour partial-body massage or you may want to get just a 20 or 30 minute session to see how your body responds.

When you arrive at the establishment you should be warmly greeted and offered water while you fill out the paperwork and wait to meet your therapist (if you did not meet them prior). Your therapist should introduce themselves to you and welcome you and direct you back to the massage room. The therapist should then ask you about your specific goals for the session and listen to you before proceeding. You should feel that the therapist cares deeply about your goals for the session and is interested in helping you achieve them. The treatment room should be relaxing and comforting. The massage therapist should explain that you can disrobe to your level of comfort.

Another way to find a great massage therapist is to find somebody who's been in private practice or in business for themselves. If an independent massage therapist has built a clientele and has a private practice, chances are there's a good reason. A good massage brings return clients. Usually you can find a really good therapist in business for themselves for less than half of what you pay at a resort.

Massage therapy can help almost any health condition, but there are certain situations where massage can make the condition worse (also called contraindications). If the person is suffering from a fever, or infection of any kind, massage will make the person feel worse. Also, if the person is intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, massage is not warranted for the same reason. If the person has advanced disease, he/she will need written permission from his/her primary care provider stating that the massage will be beneficial and not make the disease worse. Recent injury or surgeries (less than four weeks) generally also require written permission from the primary care physician before the therapist can continue.

Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is suitable for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion problems. It focuses on the prevention and healing of injuries to muscles and tendons. Sports Massage differs from therapeutic massage in that it is a deeper form of soft tissue massage using specific techniques to treat physically active individuals.

If you have osteoarthritis (OA), make sure the massage therapist avoids direct contact on the areas of pain, the affected joints, themselves. Using gentle and broad pressure to muscles surrounding the joints can bring relief. For those with rheumatoid arthritis, they should avoid all direct pressure on the areas of pain or inflammation. There is a technique that uses slower movements that can bring relief to the areas of the tension surrounding the affected areas.

Massage therapy is the practice of using touch to manipulate the soft-tissue and muscles of the body. It is performed for a variety of reasons, including treating painful ailments, decompressing tired and overworked muscles, reducing stress, rehabilitating sports injuries, and promoting general health. Clients often seek massage for its medical benefit and for relaxation purposes, and there is a wide range of massage treatments available.Massage therapists can specialize in more than 80 different types of massage, called modalities. Swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, reflexology, acupressure (similar to acupuncture but without needles), sports massage, and neuromuscular massage are just a few of the many approaches to massage therapy. Most massage therapists specialize in several modalities, which require different techniques. Some use exaggerated strokes covering the length of a body part (such as the leg), while others use quick, percussion-like strokes with a cupped or closed hand. The knowledge base of the public. Most lay persons, and whiplash sufferers, may not know there is a difference between spa massage, and massage and bodyworking techniques that can be effectively utilized to speed healing from whiplash. I am not slighting the spa industry. Massage for relaxation has its own therapeutic value, although it is not well suited for site specific injury treatment. What's the difference between spa massage and medical or therapeutic massage? Spa massage tends to be a more generalized effort to calm the nervous system and reduce general tension in the structure. Medical massage, or therapeutic massage, is more focused and endeavors to address trauma and to alleviate pain in the short term. The long term goals are to effect mechanical changes, make histological improvements (effect changes in the characteristics of the tissues involved), and to restore function and balance to the structure.

The best way to find a massage therapist is to get a referral from a friend who gets massage therapy or a health professional who is knowledgeable about forms of complementary and alternative health care such as massage therapy. Or you can contact Queensland Association of Massage Therapists and the Australian Massage Therapists Association for names of qualified massage therapists in your area.

Most states that regulate massage require that the Massage Therapist must drape the client at all times, only undraping the current area being worked on. Massage Therapists holding liability insurance are held to a set of conduct and ethics that must be followed at all times. Not following these rules or those set by the state can result in disciplinary action being taken against the massage therapist. Massage therapy can be used for either relaxation or to relieve stress or lessen the effects of disease or injury on the body. Massage therapy in considered a CAM - Complimentary and Alternative Medicine and most massage therapists work in conjunction with other healthcare providers. Massage therapists may work with Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, nurses and physicians of all specialties.

The best way to find a massage therapist is ask a friend or healthcare professional, such as chiropractor, family doctor, or personal trainer, to recommend one. Be sure to ask the massage therapist about their training, experience, and license credentials. Also, ask your insurance company about coverage as some insurance plans will pay some or all of the session fees. If not, check into your flex spending plan or health saving accounts as often you can use one of these to pay for the sessions.

If you have any goals for the treatment, make them known. Make sure that your massage therapist can accommodate your goals. If for instance, you like a firmer massage and you make an appointment with somebody who's typical massage is a light Swedish, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you sense that the massage therapist you are working with is not listening to your needs, it is perfectly alright for you to end the massage session. This may seem a bit harsh, but wasting your time and money on ineffective treatments is not an acceptable option.

Massage lost some of its value and prestige with the unsavory image created by "massage parlors." This image is fading as people gain the understanding that massage can relieve disease as well as aid in relaxation. As more people learn about the benefits of massage and it's relation to disease, the more acceptable it will become.

Of course if the massage establishment you go to does not produce a massage that meets or exceeds your expectations then you would get more massage that is basically worthless. There are options out in the marketplace. Use this reference to help you receive a massage that meets your expectations.One is relaxation. The best and probably the biggest benefit is relaxation, that's number one. Massage should bring a sense of well-being to the body. Mary Kathleen Rose is a certified massage therapist in Colorado and after 25 years of experience, and much of that working with those with chronic conditions, she has developed a style of massage she calls Comfort Touch that is characterized by slow, broad, and surrounding pressure. It's not known exactly why or how massage encourages relaxation. There are also psychological benefits. The psychological benefits from massages are well documented. Massage can change your mood, alleviate any anxiety and depression you may have, and improve your feelings of well-being and safety and this is why so many people will turn to massage.

Swedish massage, the most popular worldwide, is also known as 'Classic massage' and is the foundation for most other types of Western massage. It involves using firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, working on areas of specific muscle tension. It is performed on bare skin using oils or lotions. The therapist uses their hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes by increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, it increases the speed body cells can eliminate their waste materials.

Note: For some people their level of comfort may be to keep all of their clothes on. This is perfectly fine. I have worked with clients who started with me working with me fully clothed and as their comfort level increased they began to remove some clothing so I could massage directly to their skin. The fact is that massage therapy feels better when it is applied directly to the skin. The other fact is that a skilled massage therapist can work with you with all your clothes on and still provide a great massage.

Once you are on the table you should not have to wait too long for the therapist to come and start the massage. The therapist should enter the room and ask you how you feel on the table. How is the temperature of the room? How does the table feel? How do the pillows or bolsters feel?

How much experience do they have as an individual or as a group? How much knowledge is under one roof? This is an important consideration, because inexperienced therapists who are not being supervised or mentored, may miss problems common to a whiplash injury. There are problems of which the patient may not be aware. For example: a patient was rear-ended while sitting at a traffic light. It is common for a person holding the steering wheel in this situation to have shoulder joint injuries which are masked by the overwhelming neck pain. An inexperienced therapist may neglect to do simple palpation of the shoulder, which would be surprisingly tender to the patient, and confirm the injury. A missed condition that will become more evident as the inflammation in the neck subsides. This shoulder injury could be unnecessarily challenged by the insurance company responsible for payment. The insurance company would argue that the shoulder injury was not from the accident, since it was not charted on the initial visit. I understand that this is unfair, but it is how insurance companies usually behave. The point here is that massage therapists who are experienced in treating whiplash know what to look for and how to treat it.

Massage is beneficial to everyone; from premature infants to the elderly. Massage helps infants to thrive and grow; helps children with a variety of medical, physical and emotional problems; and helps relieve the pain of the people who are dying.

As mentioned before not all states regulate the practice of massage. Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Vermont, and Wyoming are the states where massage is currently unregulated. Check the American Massage Therapy Association website for the latest update.

You may think that asking somebody how long they've been doing massage therapy is a good measure of talent, and it can be, but not always. I've had lots of massages from long practicing massage therapists who's massage lacked talent and/or effort. People get burned out with all kinds of jobs. Massage therapists aren't any different. The rub is, you don't want to end up on their table if you can help it.The better a massage therapist gets at a modality, the more they will pull it out of their bag of tricks. If a therapist is good at therapeutic techniques and deep tissue, they'll usually tell you their massages are deeper or firmer. Somebody who typically does lighter work will tell you their massage is geared more toward relaxation, or they may say that they do more of a Swedish massage which is described as long, relaxing (and generally lighter) strokes.

3. Why massage modalities are a thing of the past and what a massage modality is. If you are new to massage you will peruse the massage menu and wonder what all these treatments are. A massage modality is a massage technique that has a specific purpose for the massage receiver. There are literally hundreds of massage modalities and they can seem daunting to someone who has never received a massage before. There is also misrepresentation of massage modalities by therapists who are not adequately trained in the modality they offer. This is due to the third point I discussed in the potential problems massage consumers can experience when receiving massage.

The great physical, mental and emotional changes of pregnancy affect your lifestyle, your job and your relationships with friends and family. Massage helps you integrate these changes successfully. Massage therapy during pregnancy improves overall health, decreases stress and relieves muscles aches and pains. It addresses the many discomforts associated with the skeletal, muscular and circulation changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy.

Massage for cancer patients is a safe, non-pharmacological treatment without any side effects. It helps reduce anxiety, fatigue, depression, stress, tension, anger, insomnia and improve self-image and quality of life. Massage may reduce pain, muscle tension, nausea, constipation, lymphoedema and scarring.

During a massage, the client is positioned on either a massage table or massage chair. The massage table is well- padded for comfort, easily cleaned between clients, and has a padded horseshoe-shaped head support to allow for proper positioning of the neck and easy breathing while the client is facedown. The massage chair is also well-padded, easily cleaned, and offers a padded horseshoe-shaped headrest but the client remains in a more upright, sitting position. Typically, a chair massage is for a shorter duration from 5 to 15 minutes and is done with the client fully clothed. A table massage session usually lasts from 30 to 90 minutes with the client partially or completely undressed under a sheet and/or blanket. Often pillows or bolsters are used to help with body positioning to add to the comfort during the session. Massage tables and chairs are typically portable and can be easily setup almost anywhere.

After the massage your therapists should thank you for the session and discuss their assessment of your muscular health. Your therapist will explain what they recommend for a treatment plan for you to achieve your goal. It may be as simple as you needing to receive massage once a month to keep stress levels low enough to help you to better manage your life; or it may require that you come in as often as 2X a week for 6 weeks to aggressively treat a specific issue you are dealing with.

Massage therapy is becoming increasingly sophisticated and effective as it moves into new areas such as medical massage which is the fastest growing modality of massage today. Training in massage therapy was an integral part of medical massage and nursing care up to the mid 1950s when it dropped to almost nothing due to the rapid development and almost exclusive use of technology in the twentieth century. Manual therapy was no longer seen as necessary for standard hospital care. Today, however, it is realized that massage in the hospital is necessary to provide a sense of wholeness and care which is absent in the increasing fragmentation of hospitalization due to the growing emphasis on specialization. Medical massage uses the traditional strokes of massage which are then specifically adapted to treat, for instance, cancer patients, hospital patients and pregnant women. Medical massage may be given in the hospital setting, an outpatient clinic or as a mobile therapy where the therapist travels to the patient's home to give the patient a personally tailored treatment protocol.

Thus cancer massage is a uniquely designed therapy which complements the curative medical treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Hence, it requires more extensive knowledge of medical procedures, pathology and side effects than ordinary therapy. Failure to understand this will result in harm to the patient as the therapist will not be able to adapt the therapy to design a competent treatment protocol.

An experienced therapist or therapists who have worked with many whiplash cases. Less experienced massage therapists can render excellent advanced work as well, when properly mentored. Seek a therapist or organization where whiplash is one of the primary conditions they treat.Massage is one of the most effective treatments for correcting and maintaining correct posture. A skilled massage therapist will be able to perform a postural analysis and determine which muscles are short and which are long. Treatment will include a full assessment of the type of work and sports that we do. From this, the massage therapist will be able to identify which muscles are likely to be over-used and need to be targeted in the massage treatment. The targeted massage routine will stretch the shortened muscles, which will help normalise posture. In addition, the massage therapist will usually suggest targeted home exercises to strengthen weakened muscles.

This treatment involves using static pressure focused on a specific area called a trigger point and does not involve massage of the whole body. By applying pressure to the trigger point for several seconds, the lactic acid build-up at the trigger point is dispersed. This relaxes the muscles by increasing the blood flow and oxygen available to them, which releases lactic acid and thus the cause of pain, via the nervous system. Muscle pain and soreness are neutralized by repeated concentrated pressure over the trigger points.

This seated treatment involves applying pressure to "Zone" areas on the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. Reflexology stimulates internal organs, boosts circulation and can restore bodily functions to normal. Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating the foot, which increases the flow of vital energy to various parts of the body as well as releases endorphins (the body's natural pain killers)

If for any reason you feel uncomfortable during the session you should be able to state it and have the therapist validate your feelings by making the necessary changes. So, it's as easy as just speaking up. Unfortunately, I have heard from too many massage consumers who have received a massage that they were uncomfortable, but they did not speak up because they did not want to upset the therapist.

You should be covered or draped with sheets properly during your massage. This is not only a law, but is intended for your comfort. This means that only the area of your body that is being massaged will be exposed. The rest of your body will be covered by a sheet and when you are cold a blanket as well.

Many physicians still have limited knowledge about the usefulness of massage and bodywork. Massage and bodywork for medical conditions and injuries are still in the process of gaining acceptance by the medical community at large. The good news is that more physicians everyday are opening up to, and recognizing the benefits of, utilizing massage and bodywork for injury treatment.

While this article is not meant to answer all of your questions on how to find the right massage therapist or organization, I hope it gets you well on the way to finding the person or persons who can render the most effective massage for your whiplash treatment, and help you fully heal from your injuries.

Clearly, talent is not just about how long a massage therapist has been practicing, it's much more about wanting to do your best and loving what you do. I've had really good massages from new graduates with great attitudes.

The massage therapist will judge my body. I have yet to meet a massage therapist who is judgmental on someone's body. Over the years I've been asked the annoying question, "How does my body rate from a scale of 1-10?" Seriously, I tell clients that I'm looking for limited range of motion and compensation in the body. That will usually get them off that topic. You can come up with your own clever response to that line of questioning!

The different types of massage include: Post-event - to bring body tissues to normal state. Restorative - during training allows athletes to train harder and minimise chance of injury. Rehabilitative - aimed at alleviating pain due to injury. A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem sustained through sport. It stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids which allows for optimal metabolic exchanges, enhanced recovery after intense training, better performance and decreased onset of muscle soreness as well as reduces the possibility of injury.

2. What you should expect from your massage therapy treatment. The massage therapy treatment should specifically fulfill your desired result. You should expect that you are going to work with a skilled massage therapist that is going to listen to your issues and help you receive a massage that is very satisfying for you. From the moment you call in to schedule your massage treatment you should have a sense that you are going to work with a therapist that is going to treat you as an individual and respect your individual needs. It is appropriate to ask for the massage therapist's credentials and experience.

Massaging babies also help with any digestive problems and gives colic relief. As well, if your baby is going through teething, or any other painful process when growing up, massaging them can really help them take their mind off their pain.Like any worthwhile undertaking, your anniversary gift buying will go more smoothly with a few rules laid out up front. Here are a few tips to follow so you won't be embarrassed by rejection when you show up with a pearl thingamajig on your parent's thirtieth anniversary.

Massage therapy has many benefits, from increasing circulation and immunity to reducing pain from disease and injury. In pregnancy massage the therapist must take into account mainly musculoskeletal issues caused by the weight of the growing uterus altering the centre of gravity of the woman's body. Treatment in this case will focus especially on upper and lower back pain, sacroiliac dysfunction as well as pubic symphysis and lower abdominal pain. The therapist must also be alert to and able to detect acute medical problems such as deep vein thrombosis and preeclampsia which are both potentially fatal if not medically treated.

Whether the room for head massage is in a salon, a therapist's home or the client's home, the therapist will prepare the room with relaxing music, dim lights, candles and a burner with relaxing Aromatherapy oils which usually compliment those used in the head massage.

While there are more than 250 varieties of massage techniques, most practitioners use one or more of a few basic methods. Many use a form of Swedish massage, which employs long, flowing strokes meant to be calming and relaxing. As your body becomes relaxed, the massage therapist can also apply focused pressure to relieve areas of muscular tension. Other popular forms of massage include deep tissue massage, which features strong pressure on deeper layers of tissue, and myofascial release, in which long, stretching strokes releases the tension in the fascia (the connective tissue around the muscles). There are also the Asian techniques of acupressure and shiatsu, which use finger pressure on specific points on the body, and the technique called reflexology, which upholds that rubbing certain points on the feet, hands, or ears has a positive effect on various body parts.

A massage therapist once told me that she refused to lift any limbs anymore. She said it's too much effort. This was from a woman who had been doing massage therapy for over 10 years. Seriously? Who wants to pay somebody good money if they can't even be bothered to lift your arm?

Due to reflex effects through the autonomic nervous system, massage affects internal organs and areas removed from the area being treated.
